The persons nominated as Candidates are :— George Samuel Sale. James Alexander Bonar. Evan Prosser. William Shaw. Samuel Boyle. Dated the 2nd day of December, 1868. G; G. FITZGERALD, 4411 Returning Officer. Notices. VOTERS OF HOKITIKA, j WE wish to state briefly one of our chief reasons for upholding Mr Sale at this election, and" why, without referring to thW other candidates, whether they came early rir late' irittf the field, we think him entitled to a vofe from each of you.^ We are going to give a Vote" winch—^if we know what we are about ourselveS-^wiil be perfectly free, and, moreover, intelligent, as, on an important occasion like the present, all must be anxious that it should be* Interested as we are in the welfare of the Corporation of the Coitnty Council and Inhabitants of ike Coimhj of Westland, we are. Cdu'scioas.that we ought to try and make si good beginning, for it — for such a beginning often gif e& its own sfamj) to the whole of a subsequent career. TMt our vote is free may be seen, in some measuYe?, by our taking this step of publishing the name of one of the candidates we shall give it to ; that it is intelligent we ask you to judge on perusal of our reasons — or one of our reasons — for giving it to Mr Sale. You know now what many have known for some little time, that Mr Sale, after hating served several Governments in succession in Westland about four years with unflinching' industry ftrid attachment, is at last left out. It may. be owing to j accident, or to unavoidable circumstances', but it is the fact. Unless the new County Council, and Unless each succeeding County Council should endeavour Jo create a County Secretaryship for doing the work of the County, instead of the Chairman atid Delegate himself doing it, the office of County Secretary is already defunct. One sitfrfig of ii Council has already taken place under our new Act, at which it does, not appear that any notice was fakeri of the absence of the office of County Secretary ; and Mr Sale, finding what has been done with him, has, without any delay, immediately presented himself before us, and challenged us to give our judgment respecting him for all his past dealings among us. We know these to be the facts, and seeing that the candidate had no other course by which he could establish whether he has done his part as a man should to his fellow men, we have taken up liis cfoHen^e ,' and. we are bound, to say that JVlr Sale'§ bfficial career in presence of us has beenVwc lJe-~ lieve, a good and useful career, and that he has not done anything which ought to cause a forfeiture of our esteem and respect, won from us by his many great merits. As far as we know, his behaviour deserves our entire approbation, as long as he and we have resided together on this Coast, though lie has often been placed, as some of us well know, in very difficult positions, We believe he has honestly tried to do his duty. And now, as he is unquestionably worthy to be our representative in the Council, and will probably be as able as any other candidate now before the public, to do what may be required at any time from a member of that body, we desire, under such circumstances, to testify to our judgment passed up n him in answer to his challenge, by recording all our votes in his favour at this election, We invite you all to do the same, no matter which candidate besides may be preferred. We are not aware 1 ' that we interpret Mr Sale's action in seeking the suffrages of Hokitika voters, as he himself would have chosen to explain it to us, but we claim to exercise our own judgment in such a matter. And this is the way we have come to read all the events which have happened, after a fair inquiry into the facts. It is very long since we have left off" the custom of reading in the newspaper of a morning that Mr Sale had gone and committed some other iniquity against us overnight, and we should like to sever ourselves if possible from thoso days, and to show that we discard the influence of much that used to be said or written then. Many of us have had time and opportunities (espe ially some of us who acknowledge that we were misled) to learn and know Mr Sale better — to know him more nearly as he is instead of that which he Avas wrongly represented to be. Even with some faults which hetellsushe has and with some others which he is alleged to have, he is neverthecss a very suitaole candidate for Westland in our judgment ; and we purpose doing him such justice as we can in respect to his past career on the West Coast by steadily voting at this election in his favor. We ask each of you if you do not think you ought to do so too. Let every one vote who has the right, and let him vote fair. Whatever the result may be it will be more instructive than if Mr Sale had gone to a ! country District, where he was assured of greater favor being shown him than in Hokitika. Mr Sale has told us he wants neither fear nor favor from any one. We hope the result on Thursday will be satisfactory to liim. GIJORGE FINDLAY. Alexander Meb. R. & T. Hawortii. H. Meyer. P. M'Guire. Ferdinand Upiiam. J. P. Klein. 4222 P. Hawses. THE WESTLAND JOCKEY CLUB. A MEETING of the Programme Commitce will be held this Evening at Eight o'clock, at Dyson's British Empire Hotel. All Members are particularly requested to attend. By Order, E. W. JONES. Secretary, Holcltikft, oth PecemtoJiy 1 868,
