THE WAIM E A.

(feom ora own coebespondent.)

August 26. Now that the migratory inclinations of the miners are thoroughly aroused to the fabulous accounts of the gold finds in other parts, they are very properly considering that ib is high time to be on the look-out for further discoveries, considering nothing in the shape of new ground of any decided importance has been opened in this district for some eighteen months ; and, therefore, to further prospecting, thei*' attention is necessarily drawn, and it is only proper and just, in order to' enable them to face the attendant difficulties, that aid should be at once afforded them by the Government in the indispensable matter of track cutting, to enable them to see their way at all clear towards the successful £tchi<?i r ement of this object, upon which solely hinge's the future prosperity not only of this district, but of the entirety of Westland; and with this aid afforded them, it is confidently believed their efforts would be attended with every just reason of expecting success. Mining affairs have been in a somewhat quiescent ttate during the past week, consequent upon the fine days we have been favoured with, and it certainly stems somewhat incongruous to be so soon calling out for rain after the long spell of wet we have this season had ; but where everything depends (as it does here) uuon the favourable results of the mining operations, and as water is the cry 6f the district, all self-interest must be sacrificed to the general weal, although it has proved a great treat to those engaged otherwise thsin in mining; r I may, after this, fairly " ivait awhile" before reviewing matters at the gullies — viz., Maori, Italian, and German— as every week forms a repetition of the one previous in regard to them. In my visits I am totally unable to elicit anything fresh from those engaged, a little to spare over tucker being, in most cases, the state of a flairs.

At Lamplough, Conway and party's cement (which has a very rich appearance indeed) is awaiting the erection of Dodd's new machine, which is expected to be ready for it in about a fortnight. . The cement has been got out of Dalton's pile claim, which was considered worked out by them some months since.

The workings on Second, Third, and Fifth Terraces are satisfactorily continuing to give their usual veiy steady yields. The rush reported in my last as having taken place to an adjoining spur to Finn's Lead, on Fourth Terrace, has not fulfilled the expectations formed of it. About ten claims are on payable ground, and there is, apparently, no room for additional numbers.

The scattered population at Scandinavian and Sawyer's are continuing to obtain sufficient for current expenses, but just at present are retarded in their operations by the prevailing " water want." As to Liverpool Bill's and its vicinity, I regretted much to see tho local in your issue of yesterday, remarking upon the prospects obtained at this new rush, the information you received is by far too glowing, and by no means correct. It is Unnecessary for me to state the immense amount of injury such false reports are calculated to do a district, to say nothing of the loss and disappointment which must accrue to the miner in consequence. I am in a position, however, to state that Humphy's and its locality is likely to give employment to a great niany^ and beg to offer my reasons ibr such a belief. At Humphy's proper, there are at present five parties on more than payable gold, viz., Blake and party, Old Jack and party, Frank Martin and party, Bell and party* and Fisher and party, and ■ ner.r these Gilbert and party have bottomed satisfactorily, and below Bill's Claim Tobin and Co., bottomed a shaft yesterday off the lead, and obtained twelve dwts of scaly gold, proving to be of a different character from that got on the lead — which is rough and coarse. At about a half-mile distant from Humphy's proper, Kenny and party bottomed their shaft at twenty-five feet, and got very §ood results ; they applied, to Mr Warden chaw for an extended claim, and showed to him two prospects, one of 7 grains, and 'the other of 11 grains to the dish, this caused a large influx of persons on the ground, and many claims to bepegged off. The next two claims to Kenny's bottomed yentc relay, and the result was only the color. 'I his locality is very much believed in, ;;ad it is the intention of one or two storekeepers from Stafford Town to erect branch stores there. It is to be hoped that the Head Board will not lose sight of tho resolutions passed by them in regard to the state of the track.
