MELBOURNE.
The " Argus" of August the Oth, says* —
An extremely quiot duy has been passed in the import markets, business in general trade having been all but suspended, pending the mail's arrival. Breailstufc have" shown little activity, only a few bakers' parcels of Victorian llour having passed from the hands of holders, nt. £18 to £18 10s. The larger buyers still evince euflicient eagerness to operate, but they are prevented by the stiffness of holders. Thcro are no buyers of best qualities of wheat over 7s 9d. Wo hear of no transactions in oats. Maize, however, is disposed of very freely at 33 54d to Ss Gd ; some 600 bags have been quilted in parceb. . The sale .of sugar ex Paul Eiquct, attracted a large attendance of the trade. The cargo comprised some 8000 bngs, 5000 of which were disposed of from the bo*£ at 27s to 30s for good rations, 31s to 31s 6d for brown, 32s 3d to 34=3 6d for yellow crystals, and 36s 6d to 38s for middling to gcoi while. Thlbsct'pi ices show no further advance, but fully ''sustain late sales' rates.
