Cr Shaw suggested that the Council should go into Committee on the matter. It would allow greater latitude for discussion, and he had suggestions to make which could not very well be made in the course of a formal debate. He was desirous of getting information as to the lands which were not yet taken up, as he thought it very desirable they should be taken up as soon as possible. Cr Prosser would oppose the proposition for going into committee. Cr Shaw could easily make his suggestions to the sab-committee. The motion was then put and passed. Cr Prosser moved that a sub committee be appointed for the purpose of carrying' out the foregoing and alsd to collect subscriptions for those who were in distress ; and further, to apply to" the Government to subsidise tie amount raised. Such committee to consist of Crs Fitzsimmons, Ecclesfield, Prosser, and Anderson. Cr Fitzsimmons seconded the motion.

Tue motion was put and passed. Cr Prosser called the attention of the Council to the necessity of carrying off the surplus water in Beach street, and moved that the Town Surveyor be empowered to take the necessary steps to effect that object.

Cr Ecclesfield seconded the motion, which was put and passed. Cr Shaw would move — "That notice be published that several sections of land in the Town of Hokitika were not yet occupied, and that the Town Surveyor would point out the sections to applicants.' 1

Cr Prosser would be happy to support the motion, if it were put in the form of a recommendation to the sub-committee.

Cr Shaw said that although he agreed with the propriety of occupying Cass Squaro, yet there were other lands besides Cass Square which lie hoped to sco occupied. Tho motion was not seconded.

Cr Shaw moved — " That application be made to the Goldfields Secretary, that the new Police Barracks might be occupied temporarily by those families whose houses had been washed away on the boach." This would afford immediate relief uufcil they could be otherwise accommodated. Cr Prosser seconded the motion, which was put and passed. The Council then adjourned.
