Saturday Evening, The amount of import duty collected at the Custom House to-day was Ll9l 3s lOd. The following list of merchandise cleared shows its distribution :—: —

The considerable activity which has characterised business in the import market during the week has been hailed by all parties concerned with unqualified satisfaction. The contrast with the previous four weeks having been as marked as it was desirable. Shippers and consignees alike rejoicing in the termination of the compulsory holidays forced upon them by the long detention of vessels in the roadstead owing to the condition of tho entrance and difficulty in reaching tho wharf, which is now, happily, sufficiently improved to crowd the harbor with shipping, and give an impetus to business so much desired. The heavy stocks of merchandise made available in so short a time has not tended to harden markets, although there has not been any large parcels of major staples put promptly forward, importing houses boiug mainly eniployod iv taking into store their numorous and heavy shipments just to hand. Colonial

produce, coreals and fruits of a bulky and perishable nature hare only been offered alongside, realising fair rates. It is anticipated stocks will be fully replenished during the week, and market rates assume a more tangible character than has been the case for some time. Duty paid on imports during the week amount to £3671 4s sd.
