The " Melbourne Leader " of the 12th inst. reports as follows :—: —

" Business continues in a most unsatisfactory position in the import markets, the trade still purchasing very sparingly, and only for actual wants. Breadstuffs were not dealt in in quotable parcels to-day, and the demand for consumption is not brisk. Prices, however, are firm at Ll3 to Ll3 los for town mills flour, and about Ll3 for Victorian country made for bakers' lots. A small parcel of colonial grown Cape barley realised 3s 3d, and a line of Californian, in faulty condition, was placed at a full figura. Maize is quoted at 3s Bd, bntvory little has been doing in the article for some days past. Oats are entirely neglected, and fair feed cannot be said to be worth over 2s 10id. Malt has met with a little attention to-day ; a line of 1000 bushels was quitted at 9s, and a parcel of 4000 or 5000 bushels has been placed on private terms. Caudleß are not looked upon with favor by buyers j an inquiry for export, however, led to the disposal of a thousand boxes Brandon's, at lOd, in bond. Trade »t*le» of the same brand

have been effected at Hid to ll&d, duty paid. Do Roubaix's were placed at 10£ d, in bond. At auction foreign heavy-weights, sold with all faults, realised lOJd to lOJd, net cash. In sugars, the sale of two lines of yellow crystals is reported at L 35. At auction, the Eugenie's Java sugai's, sold as per bulk,fetched L 33 10s for grey crystalised, L 23 10s to L 26 for browns, and LlB 15s to LlB 17s 6d for very low rations. 1091 bags Java rice, ox the the same vessel, realised L 23 18s. At the same time the Java rice, ex Jcannie Oswald, was sold at L 23 10s to L 27 ss. A line of sixty tons galvanised iron of an English brand has been quitted in parcels at up to L3l 10s por ton. Currants have been moved off at 4d to 4&A, according to sample. Dried apples were placed at Bd, in bond. In liquids very little was doing ; the only sale coming before us being that- of some Borthwick's stout at 8s 9d. Timber, ex Levanter and Nellie Chapin, was sold to-day, with all faults.
