RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Dbunk and Incapable. — Wm. Chambers was fined ss, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Conspibing to Muedbb. — William De Lacy, on remand" from the 27th ult., was further remanded at the request of the police, until the 11th inst. WiHTtii. Mcbdeh.— James Wilson, alias Murray,- on remand from the 27th ult., was also remanded until the 11th, at the request of the policd Labceny.— Stephen Parker was charged by Herrman Meyer with stealing a quantity of spirits from his house, known aa the Halfrway flouse, Teremakau, on the 19th of July^ 1865. The prisoner was remanded until the 11th inst., to allow the police to procure the attendance of a witness residing at the Grey. Information Demanding Surety op the Peace.— James Godfrey was charged by his wife, Mary Ann Godfrey, with assaulting her on the 30th ult. Both parties failing to appear, the information was dismissed. L'abceny.— \yilliam Reid was charged by John Pooley with stealing some porter bottles, value ss, from his premises; off Beach street. The prisoner was remanded until Monday, the 6th inst. Bbeacii of Public House Obdinance. —Richard Ward, of the Nag's Head Hotel, Hokitika, was charged with having his house open after hours, on the 22nd ult. ; and further, with" keeping a disorderly house on the evening of that day. The case was adjourned to Monday, the 6th inst. Violent Assault.— John . Craig was charged with violently assaulting Thontag Miller, at the "VVaimea, on the 30th ult. The complainant and defendant were mates in a claim, and a dispute arose between them, on account of defendant absenting himself on several occasions. On the 30th July, defendant returned, and went to work ; complainant objected to his working, and alleged as his reason, that as defendant had been away some time, he had forfeited his share in the claim. A quarrel ensued, whereupon Craig struck Miller on the back of the neck with 8 shovel: Miller fell to the ground, and Craig continued striking him about the riba, two of which he succeeded in breaking. Doctor Lee was called, and stated that he had examined Miller, and found two of his ribs broken. Craig was fined £5, or, in default, one month's imprisonment, with hard labor. The bench remarking that he might consider himself fortuuate in not being committed for trial. The court was then adjourned until today at eleven o'clock.
