IMPORTANT FROM BASUTOLAND SOUTH AFRICA.

MOSESII SUES FOR PEACE.

The news from Basutoland, in South Africa, is somewhat important. Wo take the following (an extract from the " Eastern Province Herald") from the " Nelson Examiner" of tho 21st inst, Graham's Town, Sept. 8. Special news to the '• Journal" from tho camp at Thaba Bosigo up to the 21st August. ,

No fresh attack has been, made on the mountain, but great success has been achieved. Moshesh, thinking that the Boers would not again attack Thaba Bosigo, advised Letsea to send all his cattlo to tho n.ountaiu and its neighbourhood. Letsea did so, and tho burghers in great force came down upon the herds and flocks as they wero crossing the valley at the back of the mountain.

Some of tho stock were captured. But the Basulos succeeded in driving tho bullocks up the mountain. It is estimated that 25,000 cattle and 8,000 horses were thus krualed on tho top cf a mountain not a mile in length and not half a mile in width. The burghers at once placed camps around the mountain ■to prevent escape of cattle.

Most frightful mortality among the stock — thousands of which have drod of thirst and starvation. The stench is horrible. The women and children of the Basutos have crowded into the

burghers' camp. ' Moshesh has sued for peace. The terms offered by Free State Government are: — To givo up Thaba Bosigo with munitions of Avar ; all land this side Calcdon ; pay 30,000 cattle and 60,000 sheep as compensation for thefts ; and 15,000 cattle and horses for expenses of war; and special niagistinte on mountain to superintend Moshesh.
