MELBOURNE RACES.— SPRING MEETING.

First Day. Maiden Plate. — Day and Martin, 1 ; Lancor, 2 ; Kerosene, 3. Agcot Vale Stakes.— Seagull, 1 ; Flight, 2. Fish-hook came in first, but was disqualified. Melbourne Cup of 20 sovereigns each and a piece of plate, valuo LIOO, and LI 00 added. Net valuo of tho stakes, LI ,035. Mr Marshall's Tory Boy, aged, 7st 1 Mr Dowling's Panic 2 Mr AValson'a R ivcrina 3 Angler 4 Twcnty-threo horses started. On passing the grand stand tho first time, Panic held tho lead' closely followed by Poet, Minstrel, and Tory Boy in tho order named; Fisher's pair in the ruck, close up Before reaching the old stand there Avas a great tailing off* — Panic still leading, Before reaching the abattoirs Poet and Minstrel were beaten. Tory Boy, improving his position at every stride, went up and passed Panic between tho rails; and Riverina, emerging from tho ruck, mado an effort, but failed to catch the leader — Tory Boy winning by a length. Distance, two miles. Time, 3 minutes 44 seconds. On coming into the yard a' protest was lodged against Tory Boy for crossing Panic during the raco, but it was overruled. It is understood that the winner will gain £GOOO to £3000 iv addition to the stakes.

Maizo firmer ; small sales at ss. 3d., but parcels aro still to bo had at ss.
