WOMEN’S INSTITUTES Ohakune

The vice-president (Mrs Harris) presided over a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ohakune Women's Institute. A message was sent from those present to the president, Mrs Ellis, wishing her a speedy recovery from her illness and also Christmas and New Year greetings. A letter was read from the Women’s Institute in England expressing thanks for the food parcels received. The motto —“He who does his best, does well,’’ was given by Mrs Barnard and Mrs Davie read the president’s letter from Home and Country. Arrangements were completed for the children’s party and sprays were presented to members who had assisted during the year. The mystery parcel was won by Mrs Hurley and Diana Kirkwood was the winner of the Teddy Bear competition. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Daly (convener) and helpers, the former also conducted the social half-hour, some amusing competitions being thoroughly enjoyed by ail present. Mrs Compton conducted a community singing of Christmas carols, Mrs Mrs Rush being at the piano. Mrs Harris then wished everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year. No meeting will be held in January and for the February meeting, competitions are: —1 pot of rasberry jam, a peg bag made from sugar bag, premier flower and vegetable. Monthly competitions results—Uniced Christmas cake, Mrs Lodge 1, Mesdames Barnard, Weller and Harley 2 equal; Christmas novelty costing not more than ss, Mrs Barnard 1, Mrs Lodge 2. Premier flower, Mrs Tocker; premier vegetable, Mrs Thomson. Gay paper hats, a sumptuous tea and a visit from Santa Claus, who presented each child with a small gift were high lights of the Christmas party, organised by the members of the Ohakune W.I. and held in the Railway Hall on Saturday, December 16. Lucky number winners were Robin Mclntyre and peter Sellwood. Mrs Compton organised a games programme which was enjoyed by tiny tots and bigger children alike. A short concert was presented, the following children giving items, Bonnie Tocker, recitations, Jones sisters, songs; Jean Woodward, pianoforte solos; Fay Crisp, songs.
