Bergerson’s Century Highlighted Drawn Game Against South Rangitikei
The cricket match played at Wanganui on Saturday between a South Rangitikei eleven and a Wanganui team ended in a draw. The honours however, rested with the home team, which compiled 259 for nine wickets declared, and at stumps had dismissed eight Rangitikei batsmen for 120 runs.
Highlight of the game was the dominant role played by the Wanganui captain and opening batsman, J. Ber■gerson, who scored a sound century before retiring. He was missed behind th? stumns before reaching 20. and this nroved somewhat expensive for Rangitikei. but nevertheless his cricket was of good duality. Once reaching the fifties, he became a little more venturesome and two sixes and seven fours from his bat during the latter period of his innings. There were two interesting features about the game. The first scoring stroke of the match w?* a two. It was not until the scorebo°r J read 106 that another brace was recorded, all the scoring shots pit he’’ singles or fours. The second notable feature was that of the 16 wickets whkh fell, only one batsman was caught. Eleven were bowled, onn was stumped and three went lee before.
From Rangitikei’s angle the most encouraging aspect was the sucsess of the three plavers in the Rangitikei team to play Manawatu. at New Year in a Hawke Cun elimination match Monk ton scored with a well compiled 34 and Marshall reached 23. appeared to be trying to force the nace when thev were dismissed The other nlayer. Whale (10). was shaning confident!” with the bat until McDougall skittled him. Whale also bowled well, excent for on? expensive over, which yielded 15 runs. He heat the former Wellington College Old Boys’ player, J. Little, with a go n d ball. Wanganui won the toss end batted until the tea adjournment. Rangitikei, with a little under two hours’ batting time, were left a substantial obstacle to overcome to gain 260 runs for victory. Paving the wav for Wanganui s solid total was the fruitful fifth-wicket partnership w’orth 108 runs by Bergerson and Campbell. Up till then the Rangitikei bowlers were on top. but thev lost their grin of the game after the’luncheon adjournment. Both McChesney and Stanford bowled some good balls, but were very erratic at times. , , 4 The Samoan. S- Poka. who just a year ago, with his fastish deliveries, raotured six South Rangitikei wickets at Marton for 26 runs, was the spearhead of the Wanganui attack and completed the dav with four for 12 off 11 overs, six of which were maidens. Poka renewed his acquaintance with some Rangitikei batsmen with a vengeance. Details: —
