Italian Steamer Wrecked On The Goodwin Sands
LONDON, Dec 24 (Recd 6 pm).— ' The Italian steamer Santa Gata ran aground on the Goodwin Sands in the English Channel early today, and broke her back. Coastguards at Deal saw the ship approaching (lie sand-bank and tried to warn her by Morse lamp signals. They got no reply. The Italian steamer later sent out an S.O.S. reporting that she was aground that the captain had decided to abandon her. The Santa Ga a, 7049 tons, was on her way from Casablanca to Britain when she struck the sands about 10 miles offshore. Mr. James Rich, 60 year old bowman of the Walmer lifeboat, collapsed and died at his post during the rescue of the crew.
