BIG AUCKLAND TEAM FOR TARANAKI CLUB’S CHRISTMAS MEETING

With strong support from Auckland and Waikato stables, the Taranaki Jockey Club has large fields engaged today for the opening of its summer fixture which concludes on Tuesday, tors exceed the safety number, and

In several of the events the accepin the Christmas Handicap and the Taranaki Hack Cup, which provide the totalisator double, balloting was necessary to reduce the fields, those balloted out having the right of reentry up till 11.30 a.m. today. Provision for divisions has been made in the Huatoki Plate, the Borough Juvenile and the Tikorangi Hack Handicap, and as there does not appear much prospect of there being sufficient scratchings, this will make for a heavy programme. For the principal event, the Christmas Handicap, there are twenty engaged. three of them in Peter Ora, Peter Nelson and Lord Treasure, being balloted out. The three at the top of the list, Silver Sam. Kia Ora Katoa and Rev, hail from Taranaki stables, but the northerners claim a strong representation with Brown Derby, Foxtavia, Swift Beau, Tactful Lad, Whynot, Telegram, Spinalong, High Warden and Marloch, in addition to two of the balloted horses in Peter Nelson and Lord Treasure. The visitors have provided winners in the past three years with Peggy O, Knight Templar and Dominie. A feature of the race is the fact that, with a high minimum of 7.11, the topweight, Silver Sam. has to concede only 111 b. at 8.8. He won the sprint at Waverley on Labour Day and has previously won over a middle distance, and he carries the same colours as Sly Robin, winner of the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding. He would have to improve on recent form to win.

Rev has proved consistent in open company with two seconds since .he emerged from hack ranks with impressive performances, and he may meet his most dangerous opponent in Swift Beau, who has run good races without being able to win this season. Tactful Lad won at Ellerslie last June, and Inky recently won the Pirongia Hack Cup at Te Awamutu. Though there is plenty of material for a surprise, Rev, Swift Beau and Inky should provide the place-getters. As with the big race, the visitors provide a large number of the acceptors in the open sprint, the Flying Handicap, but there are also some speedsters among the Taranaki provincial division. Though Consulate gfnd Coshona make most appeal, the speedy Vigorous may be best suited by the turning New Plymouth track and the short straight. _ Some good hacks are engaged m the Taranaki Hack Cup, 'the second leg of the double, but Medieval Song, a winner at his only start this season, looks like being the favourite. Two Stratford representatives in Cool Waters and St. Martin may be best of the remainder.

Horses fancied in their respective engagements are:—
