INTENSIVE WORK BY U.S. ON ATOMIC ENERGY

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (Reed. 8.25 p.m.).—Mr. Gordon Dean, chairman of the United States Atomic Enery Commission, has told Senators that the Soviet Union is carrying on intensive work on an atomic energy programme.

Mr. Dean made the statement to the Senate Appropriations Committee earlier this week, but his remarks remained secret until tonight. Mr. Dean said the Russians had available to them facilities—“and undemocratic methods of isi'ng those facilities”—which should make it clear to the United States that their programme was ‘not leisurely.” Mr Dean told Senators that commissioners and scientists who worked with the Commission were all agreed that the Soviet Union had developed and exploded an atomic bomb.
