Mrs B. M. Silk, Wanganui, is holi daying at Kawau Island, Auckland. Mrs Martin Hume, of Masterton, visited Wanganui this week and stayed with her mother, Mrs R. Mitchell, Somme Parade. Miss Elaine Hay, Wanganui, is spending the holidays at Paekakariki Mr and Mrs Ross Campion, Selwyn Street, left last night for Auckland, where they will stay with their daughter, Mrs B. W. Potter, Birkenhead. Mrs M. Mclntosh, Wanganui, with her granddaughter, Miss L. Smith, left yesterday for New Plymouth and later will go on to Auckland. Miss A. M. Blackett, Atholbank (Flats, Wicksteed Street, left by ser- ! vice car yesterday for a visit to Wellington before going on to Christichurch. ’ Miss Alice Uttley. Christchurch, ari rives today to spend the holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs Uttiey, Alma Road. Miss Sylvia Rush, of Christchurch, will arrive in Wanganui today on a visit to her mother, Mrs M. J. Rush, Wanganui East. Mrs Newbold (nee Miss Marjorie Mitchell) and her husband, who went to California four years ago, where Mr Newbold attended the University, have returned to Neu- Zealand. They have been staying with Mis Newb: mother, Mrs R. Mitchel., Somme Parade, Upper Aramoho, before going to Palmerston North, where Mr Newbold is to do research work. Before returning to New Zealand they went to England, where Mr Newbold continued his Judies at the University and also had« few weeks’ visit to the Continent. They will be spending Christmas in* Wellington and will come to Wanganui for the New v P ar holidays, - Women’s World Day of Prayer. The neatness and tidiness of the garden’s surrounding houses in New Zealand was one of the impressions gained by an English woman freelance writer, Miss M. Whyle, who has spent four months visiting various centres in the North and South -Islands. While in the Dominion Miss Whvle has written 13 talks for the National Broadcasting Service. Before coming to New Zealand, she spent 15 months in Australia, making Melbourne her headquarters. She travelled in Western Australia, and visited Darwin and Alice Springs. She had nreviouslv seen Alice Springs in 1935. One of her broadcast talks, “A Town Named Alice,” featured Alice Springs. A children’s serial “Little White Donkey.” was accepted for radio broadcasting in Australia, as well as a feature, “Edwartt Lear.” Miss Whyle has also written articles for Australian paners. Before taking up free-lance writing. Miss Whyle was programme organiser in the visitors’ department of the British Council in London. She found the work full of interest, she said recently in Wellington. “I arranged the programmes for visitors from overseas and foreign countries to enable them to meet people in various snheres.” Miss Whyle is returning tn Sydney on Januarv 4 by the Wanganella. She will stav in Australia for several months before leaving for England.
