HUNTERVILLE NEWS Carols By Candlelight

HUNTERVILLE, Last Night (OC). —The singing of Christmas carols by candlelight was a special feature of the December meeting of the Hunterville W.D.F.F. held in St. Andrew’s Hall recently. The stage was suitably decorated, where the choir, after marching in through the hall, each member with a lighted candle in hand, took her place and led an enjoyable and very much appreciated programme of carols. Vocal items were rendered by Miss Janet Simpson,. the Wills sisters and Mr A. H. Sextus, and a humorous sketch was given by Mesdames A. Sextus, R. Still and G. McLennan. Mrs A. V. Carswell finS. Miss D. Dickie officiated at the piano. There was a good attendance of members and friends, and the’ president, Mrs S. R. McAlley, extended a hearty welcome to all present and especially the visitors. During the business of the meeting a letter was received from ti.a hospital visitor in Palmerston North thanking the branch for the box of Christmas stockings and parcels sent in for children in hospital. Mrs J. Morrison gave a comprehensive report on the quarterly provincial meeting held recently in Palmerston North. After supper, which was served by the hostesses, Mrs A. Lambert, Mrs S. Roper and Miss E. McDonald, the president extended best wishes for the festive season and a very happy evening was brought to a conclusion by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and National Anthem. FATHER CHRISTMAS AT W.I. The December meeting of the Hunterville Women’s Institute took the form of a Christmas party, when the children of members were royally entertained. The hall was very gaily

decorated and a Christmas tree laden with gifts held pride of place. The arrival of Father Christmas created great merriment among the children, and he was given a rousing welcome. He distributed a special gift along with a fancy box of sweets, a paper hat, a balloon, ice cream and soft drinks to each child. Mrs R. A. Gordon presided over a good attendance of members and friends, and a small amount of ordinary business was dealt with. A trading table, of which Mrs Peake was in charge, did good business. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs R. Hodson, Mrs J. J. Scally, and Miss R. M. Davies. Miss Bowick played the accompaniments for the singing of Christmas carols. The competition winners were: — Christmas novelty, Mrs R. Gordon 1, Mrs R. Smith 2, Mrs A. Sextus 3; fancy biscuits, Mrs R. Gordon; penny competition, Mrs R. Still. The next meeting of the Institute will be held in February and the competitions will be for four rock cakes and a garden arranged in a soup plate. The president extended the season's greetings to all and an enjoyable a - ternoon concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
