AMENDMENT TO HIDE AND PELT REGULATIONS
WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA).— The abolition of all reference to tare allowances will be generally acceptable to-the hides trade, said Mr H. G. Andrews, secretary of the Hides Committee, today when referring to an amendment gazetted tonight to the Hides Regulations, 1950. Mr Andrews said that in future there would be no additional cost to the domestic user of hides through his having to pay on the actual weight of the hide. In the past, the tare allowance had been more in the nature of a weight discount. The standard domestic prices have now been adjusted so that domestic users will be paying a lesser rate per lb, but the equivalent will be the same as on the old basis. The producers will receive a slightly lower return on the basis of per lb, but their overall return will remain unaltered. The amendment to the regulations comes into force on January 1. The Gazette also contains a consolidation of the Pelt Regulations, 1949, and the new regulations differ from the old in that no provision is made for the sale of pelts by compulsoiy auctions conducted by the Pelt Controller, no provision is made for the payment of a floor price, and no provision is made for any part of the proceeds of the sale of pelts to be paid into the meat industry account. The new regulations retain the 1949 provisions, enabling tanners to be supplied with an adequate number of pelts at a fixed domestic price. The difference between the domestic price and the ruling export price is to be paid out of the meat industry reserve account.
