PARKHOUSE LOOKS A CERTAINTY FOR SECOND M.C.C. TEST TEAM

Two good knocks by the Welshman, Gilbert Parkhouse, in the match against the Australian Eleven, should give the touring M.C.C. team hope ot better things from the middle batsmen. His 58 in the first innings and 46 not out in th? second, was accomplished in an attractive manner and there seems little doubt that he has played his way into the England team to meet Australia in the second Test commencing tomorrow. In his first, season in first-class cricket in 1948, Parkhouse made 1204 runs for Glamorgan, Including 145 against Notts. His later performances gained him a place in the England team against West Indies. Parkhouse has played in only two of the seven first-class matches during the present tour, but occupies third nlace in the averages. A right-hand bat, aged 25 years, he is a good man in the outfield. The incomparable Denis Comnton still holds his place at the top cf iho

batting list, but after his failure in the first Test, when he scored three and nought, his average dropped from, over 100 to 68.62. He has scored three centuries—against Western Australia, Victoria and the Australian Eleven—his highest score being 115. The 27-year-old Essex all-rounder. Trevor Bailey, with excellent spells of bowling in the first Test, went to the top rung of the bowling ladder. He has captured 17 wickets at an average cost of 22.82 runs. Bailey played in the Lord's Victory Test v. Australia in 1945 and hade his debut for Essex in 1946. A Cambridge blue in 1947-48 he played in all four Tests against New Zealand last year. The highest score of his career is 205, made against Sussex in 1947. Bailey has failed with th? bat during the Australian tour and occupies 12'.h place in the batting list. The averages for the first seven first-class games are:—
