Ship With Cargo On Fire Racing To Suva
WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA).— Fire-fighting tugs at Suva have been ordered t 0 stand by for the arrival of the freighter Ivor Jenny, which Is racing to Fiji with her cargo afire. She is expected at Suva on December 26. A wireless message from the master of the vessel received today by the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Wellington agents for the ship, reported damage in two holds. The fire is still smouldering in spite of attempts by the crew to put it out with water and steam. The first news of the fire received by the Shaw Savill Company came on Saturday in a radio message from the ship’s master, reporting it to be under control. No further was known until today when the master sent wireless messages to Suva requesting shore assistance, and to the Shaw Savill Company detailing the damage. ' The Ivor Jenny, which is carrying a general cargo, is on charter to the Shaw Savill Company from the Ivor Shipping Company and the Quebec Steamship Line. She left London on November 6 for Balboa, Suva and New Zealand. She was to have arrived at Wellington on January 9, but is now expected to be delayed for some days.
