Relaxation Of Import Control Welcomed By Chamber Of Commerce
WELLINGTON. Yesterday (PA).— “The further freeing by the Government of a substantial list of items from import control is another very welcome and beneficial step,’’ said the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand. Mr. H. E. Schofield, in a statement today. “The Board of Trade and the Government are to be congratulated on the firmness and promptness with which they have dealt with the situation created by New Zealan's increased overseas earnings. “Only more goods wlil counter inflation. The greater freedom to import will increase competition and benefit the public. We trust that the Prime Minister when in England next year will be able to arrange with the British Government for New Zealand to have a larger share of our own dollar earnings than hitherto in order that we may secure more dollars consumer goods. “The subsequent work of the Board of Trade in examining tariff protection for deserving New Zealand industries in place of import regulation will be watched with interest so that import control can then be abolished in its entirety,” concluded Mr. Schofield.
