HONGKONG HARD HIT BY AMERICAN BLOCKADE OF COLONY

HONGKONG, Dec 19 (Recd 11.55 pm).—The Government has cabled the Secretary of State for the Colonies asking that the strongest representations be made to Washington with a view to easing American economis blockade of the oolony. A Government spokesman said the blockade was likely to have seroiul repercussions in the colony and paralyse its trade and industry. The ban is part of a plan to prevent supplies reaching Communist China. Official and private sources estimate that Hongkong will suffer losses amounting millions of pounds if the American ban is not relaxed. They fear widespread unemployment and resultant labour troubles. Sources say if Hongkong factories are forced to close through lack of raw materials, unemployed Chinese wprkers will obviously accept Communist propaganda that America is the enemy of the Chinese people.—.
