MORE WILL BE SPENT BY TOURING BRITONS DURING NEXT YEAR
LONDON, Dec. 19 (Recd. 10.45pm>.! —As the result of increased currency] allowances for British tourist t ravel -i ling aboard, motoring organisations are planning a big extension of the staffs of their foreign touring departments next year. It is probable that the cross-Chan-nel car services, which have been running to capacity, will be greatly increased to accommodate British travellers as well as visitors from the Dominions who will be motoring on the Continent during the Festival of Britain year. On the old allowance of £5O, a record number of 100,000! cars crossed the Channel this year, compared with 60.000 the previous year, and 36,000 for the pre-war peak year. With an average of three persons per car, British motorists spent £15.000,000 on the Continent this year. With the new allowance and influx of overseas visitors it is estimated the amount will reach £50,000,060 next year.—Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent.
