Angle Parking
Sir.—The vexed question of city car parking, mentioned in this morning’s “Public Opinion" column, highlights the obvious fact that car parking control in Wanganui is in a state of flux. The vast space allotted to buses, with odd spots all over the show for churches, Taxi stands,, theatres, bike stands and what have I you, proves conclusively that the | whole system should be placed in the hands of a special sub-commit-tee of the City Council immediately. In the. first place, the buses will have to go from opposite the chief post office, who ever heard in these modern days, of the busiest place in town beipg cluttered up with bus stops? The buses should stat: at the bottom of Victoria Ave. in Tt'woo Quay, that's where they will eventually finish up, that is the logical place, and the sooner they get there the better for themselves and everyone else. There's no need for taxis to be right in the main streets, the up-to-date idea for taxis is to have parking for two right on the spot, with others being called up from some not so busy street. Two taxis could be provided for in Ridgway Street, Maria Place and Guyton Street, with reserves coming from Market Place, and Wicksteed Street. The big spaces given over to picture theatres is an absolute waste, here we have valuable room never used by theatre patrons in the day time, and hardly used at night. Theatre areas should be available for day parking to the general public and to the use of patrons at night only. The space outside the church in Victoria Avenue should be dispensed with, and an entrance provided from Cameron Terrace for special purposes, as this area also lays idle for hours, days, and weeks. The whole city parking fiasco is a reflection upon, and disgrace to, whoever is responsible for allowing the rafferty rules to continue. A special committee should be set up to call a public meeting of all interested, thrash out all suggestions, and get something done. “Action Please.”
