Improved Standard Of Shooting Noticed By Cadets At Marton School

The improved standard of shooting at the Marton District High School was commented upon by the president of the Marton R S.A., Mr G. Denbow, when presenting the shield and medal donated by the R.S.A. to the four cadets at the reco’ > school breakup ceremony. Within less than 24 hours of Mr Denbow’s remarks came the announcement from the Chief of the General Staff, General K. L. Stewart, that the Marton School had won the Imperial Challenge Shield and would represent New Zealand in the Empire-wide contest. Over the last five years there has been a steady improvement in the cadet shooting at the school since the R.S.A. donated the shield. Teams are selected on the basis of individual shooting averages over the year, weakest and strongest shots being intermingled to allow all teams and boys an equal opportunity of winning the trophy. The exercisb consists of five rounds application and fire rounds snap at 20 yards. This year the team, consisting of D. R. Pritchard, A. Notley, B. W. Brabyn and K. Green, fired 184 out of a possible 200. Individual scores with a nossible of 50 were: Pritchard 49, Notley 37, Brabyn 49 and Green 39. The improvement in shooting is shown from the following scores, which give team and individual averages:—l94s. team 107.2, individual 26.8: 1946, 139. 32.7: 1947, 143.6, 35.9; 1948. 15'3.9, 37.7; 1949, 160.9, 40.2; 1950, 176 5. 44.1. After the double success in the Earl Roberts Empire competition in 1948 and 1949, the school, with disappointment this year, was unable to field a team because of there being an insufficient number of boys to qualify for the competition. Early in the year the school learned of its success in the “Weekly Press” Shield competition and the school n-ained the champion honours for New Zealand for miniature rifle shooting in secondary schools. R S.A. XMAS PARTY. Heavy rain made it impossible for the Marton R.S.A. to proceed with its children’s Christmas party on Saturday afternoon, and it was held in the Marton District High School ground last night, instead, when conditions were very pleasant. The party commenced at 6.30 p.m. and Father Christmas arrived about half an hour later.
