U.S. Attitude Has Stiffened

American attitude towards a ceasefire in Korea is believed to have stiffened in the last few days and the chance of compromise is now regarded by many to be more remote than ever, says Reuter’s United Nations correspondent. A statemeit made by Mr Wu Hsiu-Chuan, Peking representative, coupled with his t’>’eatened departure on December 19, have left United Nations delegates and officials with very little hope of a peaceful settlement on the Chinese side. The Chinese terms for such settlepondent. A statement made by Mr Wu They are, firstly, representation in the United Nations for the Peking Government; secondly, the withdrawal of United States support for Formosa and Chiang Kai-Shek; and thirdly, the withdrawal of all United Nations forces from Korea.

This last point appeared to informed diplomats to be one on which the Chinese attitude had stiffened. It seemed, until a few days ago, as if the Peking Government might compromise on some stabilised demarcation line and a graduated withdrawal of foreign forces. Mr Wu Hisu-Chuan. leader of the Pekin® Government delegation to Lake Success, told a Press conference that the real intention of the ceasefire proposal was to tie the hands of the North Korean and Chinese forces while American forces continued their aggression in Kore/. Mr Wu declared that the United States was trying to set a trap for the Chinese people bv continuing their aggression in Korea and Formosa, reviving Japanese militarism under General MacArthur and by driving the American people into war.
