Archbishop Of Canterbury Visited Wanganui
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Fisher, paid a brief visit to Wanganui yesterday afternoon. He was accompanied by Mrs. Fisher.
The main reason for the Archbishop's visit was to visit the Wanganui Collegiate School, a foundation school of the Church of England. He arrived at 1.45 p.m. and left at 2.45 p.m. During his brief visit, he was able to give a short address to the pupils in the school chapel. It was a very hurried visit, the headmaster (Mr. F. W. Gilligan) said yesterday. His Grace said he was
sorry that he was unable to spend more time in Wanganui, but was glad to have had the opportunity of making even such a fleeting visit. Wanganui was not included in the New Zealand itinerary for the Archbishop of Canterbury. On Wednesday he was a visitor to Napier and on the journey south yesterday morning he and Mrs. Fisher paid a brief visit to Te Aute College. A last-min-ute change in plans was made, however, to enable His Grace to make his brief Wanganui visit. From Wanganui the party travelled to Wellington.
