Woman's World

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs A. Birch returned to Wanganui on Monday from the South Island, where she spent a holiday. Miss Pat Vaney, who has been a member of the staff of the District Child Welfare Office for the past two years, has been transferred to Dunedin. She was farewelled at several gatherings before she left Wanganui. Mrs Lewin Lewis, who recently returned from a trip to England and the Continent, has been visiting Wanganui as the guest of her father, Mr T. Philpot, Guyton Street. She returned to Rotorua on Monday in order to attend the wedding of her younger son, Mr George Lewis, on Saturday. After three years abroad, Miss Carrie Moore, the musical comedy actress, and sister of Miss Eva Moore, who is well known to Wanganui theatre audiences, has gone back to Sydney to finish her autobiography, which she began writing four years ago. The book will cover her life from when she made her debut on the Australian stage at the age of 12, until she was televised in a drama over Al Television Station, New York, last year at the age of 67. She was famous as Sonia in "The Merry Widow.” Wedding Gown Crocheted by Mother An Auckland bride whose marriage took place last week wore an unusual wedding gown. It was crocheted by the bride’s mother, Mrs E. Manson, of Avondale, and its making occupied three years. Mrs Manson had not crocheted a frock before but her work included many tablecloths and supper cloths. Having seen in an English magazine that a woman had crocheted a wedding gown, Mrs Manson decided to make one for the last of her three daughters who would be getting married some day. She found it quite an undertaking. Six gores made the skirt with its four-foot train and the long sleeves finished to a point over the hands. More than 80 balls of fine cotton and 20 balls of silver tinsel thread were used.
