Otto Believed Seen In Kaikoura Yesterday
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night <l*A).—A man corresponding closely to the description of Cecil Robert Gurr Otto, the convicted murderer who escaped nine days ago from the Burwood Hospital, is thought to have passed through Kaikoura about 5 a.m. today.
The man was seen going north along Beach Road, approximately two miles north of Kaikoura, on the outiskirts of lhe township, by Mr Austin Smith, a milkman, and Mr P. Sween* ey, his assistant. They did not realise |it might have been Otto until some time afterwards. The officer in charge of the Kaikoura police station, Constable D. Sterritt, was aroused about 5.30 a.m. and. accompanied by Constable E. Currie, made a search of the Beach Road area as far as Hapuku without results.
According to the description given by the informants, the stranger was wearing a light suit and was in sandshoes. He was bearded and his height was about 6ft. He was not wearing a hat. *
