Former Headmaster To Be Invited To Officiate At Marton D.H. School Break-Up

The prize-giving and break-up ceremony of the Marton District High School is to be held in the Civic Theatre on Thursday, December 14. It was decided at the monthly meeting of the school committee on Monday night when it was further decided to issue an invitation to Mr. F. A. Bates (Wanganui), a former headmaster of the school, to be the guest speaker. Several weeks ago the suggestion was made that the school choir of 40 voices, which include in its ranks a number of pupils residing in the Hunterville district should visit Hunterville and entertain the parents with choral items such as they rendered at Marton at the last Home and School Association meeting.

When the headmaster suggested that a concert be given in the Scots’ Hall, Hunterville, on Monday, Decmber 11, members of the committeed commended the idea. Such a visit, they said, would do much’ to link the parents of the secondary department pupils in the Hunterville area with the school. Mr. R. L. Morgan commented that the members of the choir were likely to get "browned oft” with practiclhg if they did not get an opportunity to appear before the public. Mr. Thompson reported (hat a local bus company had offered free transport of the Marton pupilsof the choir to Hunterville. According to information placed be fore the meeting there is every likelihood of a recording being made of several items by the school choir, for presentation to the school. Mr. A. Todd, presided over Messrs. R. L. Morgan, R. G. McConnell, D. F. Gorrie, C. Hamei, K. W. Sandford, A. W. Setford, A. Thompson (headmaster) and the secretary (Mr. D. J. Abel). MEN’S FELLOWSHIP GROUP. An interesting address on London was given on Monday night at the monthly meeting of the Marton Methodist Men’s Fellowship Group by Mr. A. Robert Brazier, who lived in the world’s greatest city for many years and has recently come to reside in Marton. The speaker eloquently referred to the rapid growth of London during the last 100 years, its historical associations, its statutes, parks, theatres and holels. This great metropolis he said, with a population of 11 million people was served with a wonderful network of underground railways, yet to cope with the huge street traffic presented a major problem. There were traffic jams and it was quite common he added, to have one extending 7$ miles. The pathos and humour of the average Londoner was ably portrayed by Mr. Brazier who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
