RAETIHI NEWS Rodeo For Waimarino

RAETIHI, Last Night (OC).—A rodeo with a comprehensive programme of events and prize money totalling £132 10s, is to be staged at the Raetihi showgrounds during March next year. The promotion of such a day's entertainment has exercised the minds of district young farmers for a considerable time and preliminaries were discussed when a new organisation, to be known as the Waimarino Rodeo Association, was set up at a meeting held last week. The meeting was well attended, and in addition to a substantial sum being guaranteed to ensure success for the scheme, there was also a tidy amount from donations, some of the individual amounts being as high as £2O. Officials elected were: President, Mr D. C. Wright; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Bell and R. Brown; ground marshals, Messrs H. Windle (horses) and T. R. Brown (cattle); committee. Messrs G. Ball, J. McCoubrie, D. Robb, J. Wills, H. Littlewood, N. Scarrow, C. Allerby, J. Pearson and D. Scarrow; district representatives, Messrs D. Coleman and A. McLean (Parapara), M. K. Ross (Wanganui), D. L. and C. B. Cotterll (Moawhango), A. E. Samways (Hihitahi), W. Coleman (Taihape), J. Church and R. Bamber (Wanganui River), J. Punch (Ohakune), L. Grace (Tokaanu), M. Ingram (Ohakune) and A. G. McDonald (Manunui); sec-retary-treasurer, Mr A. G. Sampson. The membership fee was fixed at 10s 6d.

Rangitikei Athletic Centre. The adoption of a satisfactory system of handicapping for axemen’s events continues to be one of the big problems of the N.Z. Athletic and Cycling Union, and at a meeting of axemen and members of the Rangitikei Centre held at Raetihi over the week-end discussion mainly centred round a skeleton scheme submitted by local axemen. This scheme had been tried at one sports meeting, but although there was much merit in It, there was no suggestion that it was completely watertight. The methods in vogue right down through the years have long been complained of by those engaged in the sport and it is now generally recognised that a classification of axemen is the prime need before a solution of the problem can be arrived at. Those responsible for the plan tabled had made classification the basis of their theme, but ihey asked permission to give their ideas a further trial before recommendation of its adoption by the national body and tn this the meeting agreed. The cutting sneed of the various timbers used in different parts of th-’ Dominion had an important bearing on handicapping, and details of such a factor would necessarily have to be worked out before any finalisation could bo reached. Dates applied for by the affiliated snorts clubs for their annual fixtures were granted by the centre, with the exception of Orautoha and Ngamokai (KarioD clubs; these two. only a few miles apart, desiring the same date. The position was overcome by granting Orautoha a nermit for January 13 and Ngamokai January 6.
