Man Riding Unlighted Cycle At Night Gave False Name To Police
“You will find this conduct of yours fairly expensive,” commented Mr S. S. Preston, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui, when imposing a fine of £5, costs 10s, on William Gilroy, charged with knowingly supplying false and misleading information relating to his name and address. On a further charge of riding an unlighted cycle at night, he was fined £l, costs 10s.
When stopped by Constable R. F. Burgess while riding an unlighted cycle in Victoria Avenue on the night of October 19, defendant gave his name as “William Jones,” and his address as “19 Broughton Street,” said Senior-Sergeant F. Culloty, who prosecuted. The constable was not satisfied and defendant was brought to Central Police Station, where his correct name and address were ascertained.
Senior-Sergeant Culloty added that defendant was before the court earlier this year for assault and using insulting language at the Wanganui Public Library, and on that occasion was convicted under the name of “William Jones.”
