Town Board Meeting

WAVERLEY, Last Night tOC).— The first meeting of the new Town Board was held during the week, when Messrs J. J. Johnston, E. A. Aiken, J. C. Arthur and G. Couchman were present. Mr J. J, Johnston was elected chairman. The committees appointed to the work under the board’s jurisdiction were as follows: Streets and roads, the chairman and Mr E. A. Aiken; water supply and swimming baths, Mr W. Sunningham; Town Hall, Mr J. C. Arthur; cemetery, Messrs E. A, Aiken and G. Couchman; Waverley Domain, chairman and Mr G. Couchman; Wairoa Domain, chairman and Mr J. C. Arthur. After some discussion it was decided to call for tenders for the painting of the exterior of the Town Hall.

21st Birthday Party. The coming of age of Miss Helen Bilton was celebrated on Saturday in St. Stephen's Hall by more than 7j guests. The hall was decorated with balloons and streamers of various colours. Visitors were present from many parts of the North Island. Miss Helen Bilton received her guests wearing a blue crepe frock with a flared skirt and the bodice trimmed with beadwork. Mrs F. J. Bilton wore a charming black model frock. The time was spent in dancing, interspersed with vocal items. Mr E. J. Kelly entertained with Scottish songs and Mr M. Halley led a community sing The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr R. Hughes and Mr M. Keene. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr M. Halley and Mr N. Bromiley. Novelty dances proved popular and an illumination waltz created amusement. The principal toast of the evening to the guest of honour, "Miss Helen Belton,” was proposed by Mr E. C. Dalllson. After Helen had cut the cake the traditional key was handed to her by her father. Girls’ Life Brigade Concert.

There was a good attendance at the Girls’ Life Brigade wind-up concert, held in St. Andrew’s Hall. There was a wide variety of items and the standard of singing, under the leadership of Mr S. Yoeman, was excellent. An opportunity was taken during the evening to present bouquets to Captain E. M. Howie, Lieutenant V. Milne, Cadet Leader B. Smith, Mrs S. Yoeman and Miss P. Howie, who were responsible for the organisation of the concert and the leadership ot the brigades during the year. Mr T. R. Wail thanked all the leaders for putting on such a splendid concert and all the parents for the help and co-operation in providing costumes for the various items. Items included numbers by the Girls’ Brigade choir, pianoforte solos by Pat Yoeman, Annette Jarvis, Berly Webster and Janet Dunford; recitations by Judith Yoeman and Nancy Yoeman; songs by the juniors, “If f Knew You Were Coming.” “Rocking Alone in an Old Rockin’ Chair”; nursery rhymes, tableaux and a lullaby performed by the cadets; duets by Judith and Pat Yoeman, Nola Hughes and Joy Loveridge, Elizabeth and Allison Wall, Dorothy Cavaney ana Rita Quayle; drill numbers by the juniors and seniors; a play by Judith Yoeman and Kathleen Hickford entitled “Wen ding Belles,’ and the G.L.B. play entitled "A Happy Decision.” Personal.

Sergeant H. Kitney and Corporal K. O'Leary are at present home on final leave before going overseas with the K Force. A public farewell will be tendered them next Friday in the Town Hall.

Mrs W. Farquharson is at present visiting her mother, Mrs M. Harvey. Miss J. Bilton, of Wellington, is a week-end visitor to Waverley, as the guest of Mrs F. J. Bilton. Mrs W. McKinnon has returned to Owhanga after being the guest of Mrs M. Scott.
