EMMA HAMILTON WON MILLER HANDICAP WELL

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special). Emma Hamilton did not take long to get on the winning list in open company, for she came home too strongly for Coonbridge in the Miller Handicap, principal handicap event at Te Rapa on Saturday. Star Fox, bracketed with the winner, was going better than anything else in third place at the post. Vane Master gave an improved showing for fourth, with Ozami, Merry Widow and Gay Chance next. Merry Widow and Lady Revel displayed a lot of early speed, but King Finchall ran badly, being in the ruck all the way. Classowa scored his first win at three years when he came home very well in the Kirikiriroa Handicap. His margin was narrow, but it was a very good performance. Chatril, Pastel and Coshona were prominent in the early stages, being attended at the turn by Super Vaals, Noble Victor, Woolooga and Classowa. Gold Pal came on strongly but could not hold off Classowa. Talisman also did well for third. Super Vaals, Coshona and Red Hero followed. Foxfable gave one of his best displays when he won in the minor hurdles class. There is no doubt that he likes left-handed tracks, for he has yet to win a jumping race the reverse way round. He may be tried again later on, for immediate northern meetings ahead are all conducted on right-handed courses. Penfriend led throughout the second division of the Frankton Handicap and held off the three-year-old filly Frandore nicely. The winner should not be out of his class in the handicap ranks, for he can still be improved a good deal. Frandore made a bold showing, too, and her turn may not be far off. At last the fine grey colt Reliance has got on the winning list. On the opening day of the Waikato meeting he was only a neck away from the winner in third place and on Saturday he came from the back to score decisively at the end of 11 furlongs. Re- > liance will now run out his hack nominations before taking on the handicap classes, which may not be until after the Auckland summer meeting. Melody ran a very fine race in the distance hack race the first day of the Waikato meeting and she improved upon this by being a good second to Reliance on Saturday, the surprising factor being the fine price she returned for a form horse. Melody has not been racing with much luck and, of course, has been rising in the weights, but her turn may come shortly. She seems to be endowed with plenty of stamina. One of the easiest wins on Saturday was that of Keith in the Frankton Hack, in which he was ridden with supreme confidence. He scored easily the first day, pulling up before the post was reached, and he repeated the feat on Saturday. Had he been let go the winning margin might easily have been a substantial one.
