Senior Cricket COLLEGE TEAMS CONSOLIDATE THEIR STATUS

Tech. Bowler Takes 8 for 42 Claimants that college elevens should not have been granted re-entry into senior Wanganui cricket this season should at least be discomfited—if not completely silenced by these teams’ performances on Saturday. On Cook’s Gardens, the so-called “weak” Wanganui Technical College team made 145 runs in their first knock against Tech- . nical Old Boys, then completely routed that team for 93 runs. Also, playing on their home ground, Wanganui Collegiate School overcame a formidable attack from Wanganui to put on 202 runs in their first innings and have the club team five wickets down for 47 runs at stumps. In the only inter-club fixture, Marist have a first innings lead of 22 runs over United, their respective scores being 131 and 109. Marist have begun their second innings by scoring nine runs for one wicket. Technical’s rout of Technical Old Boys was a triumph for bowler M. Poka. ...He captured eight wickets for 42 runs, off 18.3 overs. Twice, he narrowly missed performing the hat-trick, taking two wickets off an over. Maintaining a nice length he had the batsmen well subdued and bowled five maiden overs.

Without exception, the Technical team batted well up to senior standard. While there was no outstandingly high score, the best being a 34 put together in even time by Haglund, the innings was generally sound. Campbell and Uluiviti each scored 20 runs and three others reached double figures. Old Boys tried seven bowlers in their efforts to dislodge the school batsmen. Of them, Leahy proved the most successful by felling four wickets for 19 runs off four overs. McDougal took three for 32. By contrast, Old Boys did not seem at all happy at the crease. Four wickets fell before they seemed to find their feet, and the turn-over was still fairly rapid until the seventh wicket, where a stand was made by Christenson and Brown. Until then, Barnett had been the only one to show signs of mastering the bowling, and he lost his wicket to Poka before he was really into his stride. Brown and Christenson put on 41 runs for the eighth wicket, Brown staying until the end of the innings for a score of 19. Uluiviti took the other two Old Boys’ Wickets for 25 runs.

Once they got the feel of the bowling, the Collegiate batsmen sent their score ahead by leaps and bounds, in their match with Wanganui on the school ground. Third bat, Giesen, -stayed for 34 runs to provide a solid foundation on which further batsmen built up the large score of 202 runs. Russell, who batted in the middle of the innings, was the only batsman on the da v to reach a half-century. When bowled by R. Head, his total was 55 runs. His partnership with Glenn put his team ahead 83 runs and Glenn carried his bat on to score 46 not out. Scoring tapered off toward the end of the innings, but Wanganui had already been set an impressive total to overtake. Cave’s four for 44 was the best of the Wanganui trundlers’ averages, while R. Head took three for 23. Five Wanganui wickets had fallen at the end of the first day’s play. Caradus was the first of the openers to go, with the side’s total at 21 and his own at 16. Spasmodic scoring in the face of the steady bowling attack had added only 12 more runs when the fifth wicket fell. The not out batsmen are Priest and Williamson. Beattie headed the bowlers with three wickets for 11.

Marist opened their first innings against United shakily, the first two wickets going cheaply. Dhryberg and Beard made a stand at the third wicket, however, taking the score forward 44 runs before they were parted. Dhryberg contributed 36 runs, which was the side’s highest individual score—and the highest in the first day of the game. The score than advanced steadily until the seventh wicket fell. After that the bowlers, particularly Jolly, captured some cheap wickets. Stricken, who was sixth to come to the crease, saw the innings out for a score of 27, and Dow made 25 before losing his wicket to Felts. Jolly, Felts and Poananga took three wickets apiece, Jolly having the best average with only 19 runs scored off him. United maintained an even pace of scoring throughout their innings. Opener McCawe made 15 and the No 3 batsman Stent helped the side along with a nice knock of 31. In the middle of the innings Dustin came to light with another of his bright flashes of scoring and made 23 mostly off fours—before being bowled. McPhail tried to stop the decline over the latter stages, but he was stumped off Beard when his tally had reached the round dozen. Beard was the spearhead of the Marist bowling attack and he carried out his duties well, six wickets falling Id him at a cost of 41 runs. Seven of his 18.2 overs were maidens. McConway took three for 27.
