Hawker's Death; Man Arrested
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA). —At 6.30 p.m. on Saturday evening detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branch at the Central Police Station, arrested a man and charged him with the murder of Nathan C. Atkinson, 59-year-old hawker, who was found .dead in his house at 104 Antigua Street, Sydenham, on the morning of October 20. The arrested man is Vincent David Anderson, described as a timber worker, aged 32, of 61 Moorhouse Avenue, Christchurch. He will appear on the murder charge in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The arrest follows three weeks of investigation by detectives and uniformed police, under the direction of Superintendent A. G. McHugh, and Senior-Detective F. J. Brady. On Saturday practically every detective in Christchurch was at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s race meeting at Riccarton. They were scrutinising the crowds in both enclosures, and kept a watch on the queues at the totalisator. Just before the third race was run a man in a totalisator queue was detained, and then taken to the central police station. Early in the evening Anderson was apprehended in Christchurch and taken to the police station and the first man was allowed to go. Anderson was charged at the police station and held in custody.
