BOWLERS GENERALLY HELD UPPER HAND IN SATURDAY’S CRICKET

MARTON, Last Night (OC).—With the exception of Suburbs, who collared a rather weak Porewa attack, scoring was relatively low when the second series of cricket matches commenced in Rangitikei yesterday. Suburbs and Hunterville were the only teams to pass the 100 mark and then Hunterville s tally was only 102. High School performed well to dismiss last season's champions, Hunterville, for 102, and were only 19 runs in arrears on the first innings. Porewa (whose attack lacks hostility this season) spent a tiring afternoon in the paddock chasing the ball, while Suburbs amassed the respectable total of 223—the second match in succession the Porewa bowlers have seen the second century hoist-’ 1 against them. Old Boys headed Sanson by 38 runs on the first innings, in t/j game at Sanson, JXitTShe home team, at stumgs, had wipedNlff the deficit in the second innings wYyiout loss. However, when Ellery and Voss were given the ball, there was a sudden collapse and the last six wickets added only 21 runs. Ellery finished up with five for 10 in five overs. J. Illston signalled his return to Rangitikei cricket with an aggressively compiled 35, which included two sixes.

High School batted for 35 minutes again and lost three wickets for 18 runs and still require one run to avert an innings defeat. The limitations of the Porewa bowling was again in evidence when Sublurks hit up 223 runs. This is the second successive match in which Porewa —regarded as one of the strong teams —has had over 200 runs scored against them in the first inning. Chief architect in Suburbs’ big tally was the captain, Bellis, who got within 15 runs of his century, when he was given out behind. With Monk, he added 83 runs for the third w'icket. Bellis hit 12 fours. Even the “tail” offered some resistance, with Glasgow batting well for 27. Porewa employed nine bowlers, with Stanford and Williams securing three wickets apiece. Suburbs were one short. Porewa, despite a stiff hurdle facing them, commenced confidently, and in the 40 minutes before stumps scored 54 runs without loss. POREWA v. SUBURBS. SUBURBS.
