Ling Memorial Handicap At Otaki Meeting To Beau-Or; Bonnie Charlie Wins Sprint

(By

“KESTREL.”)

Following up his Bangitikei Handicap success a fortnight ago at Bulls, the Carterton-trained Beau-Or on Saturday carried off the honours in the Ling Memorial Handicap, principal event at the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s summer meeting on Saturday.

The open sprint, the seven-fur-long Huia Handicap, was won by the three-year-old colt Bonnie Charlie, and the topweight, Anvil Song, won the Waitohu Haek Handicap, second “leg” of the totalisator double. Summer weather prevailed for the meeting, which did not attract quite as large a crowd as was expected. The track was firm and fast. The totalisator showed a slight decrease compared with last year, when the meeting was held in December. The amount handled was £56,590, including £6312 on the double, compared with £57,692 last year. Well-backed candidates won a majority of the events, the largest win dividend being that of £8 15s returned by Bambton in the concluding event, and the best return for a place was the £l2 19s shared by supporters of Snow Saint, who dead-heated with Ngakoti for second place in the Ling ?\lemorial Handicap. Roka (Kuku Maiden) and Anvil Song (Waitohu Hack) were successful each-way favourites, Beau-Or and Bonnie Charlie were each win favourites though second in order on the place machine, and Ocean Spray, winner of the Kuao Stakes, was 2/1 in the betting. The amount invested on the doubles machine for the Ling Memorial was £6132, which included 2231 ten-shilling tickets on Beau-Or. Of these 557 were redeemed on Anvil Song, the doubles dividend being at the rate of £lB 14s 6d for £l. j LING MEMORIAL HANDICAP

FULL-BROTHER TO SIGNIFY Trained at Te Rapa, the full-brother to Signify, Roka, won the Kuku ’ Maiden Flat Race convincingly but ' narrowly. t Handy to the leaders. Eastern Queen, Background, Auf Wiedersehen and Oyama, as they ran to the ’, straight, Roka came through bril--1 liantly on the inner and beat Aur Wiedersehen by a nose. A length ; away, third, was Easter Queen, who ! ran a great race, and then came Jack’s Gift, Silver Cat and Admonish. ! Bambton and Super Duke, both from Trentham stables, were first and second, ahead of the Wanganui-train-’l ed Fighting Fox, in the concluding | event, the Te Horo Hack Handicap, but Bambton had to survive a lengthy inquiry before dividends were paid i out. | Repudiate, Super Duke and Waif ord had charge early but Fighting Fox soon joined Repudiate. Then Bamb- ‘ ton moved up to carry Fighting Fox along, ahead of Super Duke, Barlous, , Flying Cash and Repudiate. However, he soon ran up to trail Marloch and Blue Skimmers at the five furlongs, with Tranquil Gold, Jimmy Wilde and Denote next. The three-year-old took charge on the home turn, leading from Blue Skimmers, Tranquil Gold and Trusting. Tranquil Gold attempted to challenge the leader at the distance, but Bonnie Charlie came right away to win by two lengths. With a brilliant run Alarm beat Tranquil Gold by a head for second place, and Trusting was fourth, ahead of Denote and Jimmy Wilde.
