WANGANUI LIFE-SAVING ORGANISATION ISSUED 781 AWARDS LAST YEAR

The Wanganui branch of the Royal Life-saving Society made 781 awards last year, bringing its total to 12,852 since its inception in 1911, says the annual report. Last year a third of the total number of awards (263) went to pupils of the Wanganui Intermediate School; 138 were won by the Wanganui Girls' College, 130 by the Nga Tawa School (Marton), 56 by the Wanganui East School, 49 by the Gonville School, 44 by the Wanganui Technical College, 40 by the New Zealand Friends’ School, 31 by the Aramoho School, 22 by Wanganui Hospital nurses, and eight by the St. George's School. "Thus we have maintained our high total of awards, for which special thanks must go to all instructors and examiners. As all this work is of a voluntary nature it can be fully realised that those concerned must make some sacrifice in order to carry It out," comments the report. It also records that competitions held last season were of a consistently high standard. At the end of the financial year in August, the branch had cash assets of 135 as against a credit balance ot onlv £2 at the beginning of the year the' financial statement shows. Major income was £43 in examination fees. A further £2O came from subscriptions and donations. Awards and stock cost £24 and trophies and engraving caused the outlay of a further £lB. The report comments: 'The mam setback with finance is the high cost of engraving. If a good percentage of awards issued happen to be medals and bars, which are engraved, a loss is frequently shown instead of a profit."
