More N.Z. Dairy Produce For Sale Outside Britain

WELLINGTON, Last Night (PAL— The amount of butter and cheese available to the Dairy Products Marketing Commission for sale outside the United Kingdom this export season is estimated at 14,300 tons on a butter basis. This basis provides that two tons of cheese, count as one ton of butter. Last year the total quantity available, again on a butter basis, was 5800 tons. Giving these figurmes today, the Commission's chairman (Mr W. Marshall) said that a greater quantity was available this year because of the reduction of the pertneentage of the Dominion's exportable surplus which must be sold to the United Kingdom Ministry of Food. This was 97 per cent, last year, and 921 per cent, this year. Mr Marshall said the produce available for free sale could be made up of butter and cheese in any proportions, subject to the maximum of cheese being 14,000 tons. Already about 9500 tons of cheese and 6500 tons of butter had been sold This, on top of the butter basis, equslled 11,250 tons, so that only about 3000 tons remained to be sold between now and July next. Some of I his had to be held for steady sales to regular markets. The balance could easily be oversold immediately, and offers to buy were Sales were being spread over many countries, but’ the largest shipments had been to European and North American countries. The final realisation would be substantially higher than the United Kingdom pro forma invoice prices.
