RECORD ENTRIES FOR TODAY'S BIG SHOW

City Folk To See What The Land Produces

With larger entries, more exhibits and a wider variety of sideshoes, the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association s <6ih annual show, which opens on the racecourse this morning,

should hold more interest than ever for city and farm folk. Total entries throughout the show's competitions are up on last yeai and there is the additional attraction of the major two-day show being staged this year by the Wanganui Kennel Club. National Dancing will again have its place cn the programme. To last evening the association had sold more space than ever before for industrial and motor-car exhibits—and applications were still rolling in. Latest model cars and powered farming equipment will be on display and industrial firms from Auckland, Palmerston North and Wellington will be exhibiting their products. A competition annually growing in popularity is the Home Industries section of the show. This year 758 entries have been received, 270 more than last year. Entries for horse events have also undergone a large increase this year, the total being 800, as against 700 last year. About 100 more entries have been received for the purebred sheep contest, too, this year’s total being 325. Compared with other shows held elsewhere this year, too, the pig section, which has drawn entries from 19 different exhibitors, is a large one.

The Wanganui Kennel Club’s show, which this year is that body’s major event, has drawn record entries of 164 dogs, even more than the show held last week in Palmerston North. Several breeds not previously seen in Wanganui will be on display. They include the miniature black and tan terrier, the boxer, Staffordshire, bull terrier and French poodle. This year all activities will be centralised cn the Hoise competitions will be held on the course opposite the main grandstand, the sheep dog trials opposite the small grandstand and the gun dog trials on the ornamental lake at the back of the main grandstand. The National Dancing will be held at the back of the main grandstand and the Kennel Club will stage its show on the reserve at the back of the stewards’ stand. The Home Industries section will be housed in the ground floor of the main grandstand. Cattle classes—beef and dairy—will be judged near the Spriggens Park entrance to the racecourse, the sheep classes on the section adjoining the small grandstand, and the pigs through

the Spriggens Park entrance to the racecourse. Machinery and motor displays will be situated behind the main stand, and “Sideshow Alley”-Mecca of the young fry and their not-always-reluctant parents—will be in its usual home at the side of the main entrance to the racecourse. This year it offers even more attractions than usual. Only association members will be allowed to take their cars into the parking area, which opens on to Purnell Street. Accommodation for other vehicles has been made available in the centre of the course. Entrance is gained from Jackson Street.
