Property Owners Fined For Failing To Clear Gorse

Three property owners near Mar- , ton who tailed to clear gorse off their : land within the prescribed time were lined a total of £7 (costs £l/16/-) by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., in the Marton Court yesterday. The noxious weeds inspector, Mr. John Robinson, prosecuted on behalf of the Rangitikei County Council. Complaints had been received from a neighbouring owner that gorse seeds from the adjoining property were germinating on complainant’s property, said Mr. Robinson in giving evidence against Susannah Gray, Marton, who was charged with failing to clear gorse two chains back from her boundary fence. Defendant owned about 7 acres at Crofton of which approximately 1 to 2 acres was infested with gorse along the boundary, said the inspector. The neighbour’s land was clear. Defendant was sent a notice on March 29, 1950, to clear the gorse and was given one month, but little had been done, said Mr. Robinson. Defendant, he added, had been receiving notices for the past four years to clear the gorse.

Mr. T. K. Evans who appeared for defendant pleaded guilty and the magistrate imposed a fine of £3 (costs 12/-).

A Turakina farmer, Alexander Glasgow, was fined £2 (costs 12/-) for failing to clear gorse off his road frontage on the Ben Nevis Hill. Numerous complaints had been received of gorse growing on the two curves on the road, as vision was being obscured, said Mr. Robinson. Defendant was sent notice on July 20, 1950, to clear the gorse but when the property was inspected on October 3, only a small portion of the work had been done. Defendant had also been sent notices in 1947 and 1949 to clear the gorse. Glasow told the magistrate that he was busy with lambing operations when he received his last notice. When he did engage labour to do the work, the men left shortly afterwards to go shearing. Since the summons was issued considerable work had been done, said Mr. Robinson when prosecuting Leonard Vivian McKinnon, who was charged with failing to comply with a notice to clear gorse off his property at Onepuhi between April 20, 1950 and May 20, 1950. Defendant owned a property of 120 acres, said Mr. Robinson, and gorse was growing on the road frontage. When he made an inspection in July and September he found little evidence of any work having been done, said Mr. Robinson, but defendant had now bought a spray plant, and a clearance was being made. The magistrate imposed a £2 penalty with costs 12/-. POREWA CRICKET TEAM The following will represent Porewa in the cricket match aainst Suburbs at Marton on Saturday:—A. B. Marshall (capt.), R. S. Before the town clerk read the minutes, the Mayor said no general business would be taken at the meeting as there was a chance that councillors, innocently might say something which could be construed as electioneering. The consulting engineer’s report on the Marton water supply was received by the council, but as the present council could make no decision on the report in view of the pioximity of the local body elections, the Mayor suggested that tht report be considered in committee.
