HIGH STANDARD OF BLOOMS AT ANNUAL ROSE SHOW IN CITY

Although most showed the effects of the bad weather experienced on Monday, roses exhibited in the annual Wanganui rose, sweet pea and carnation show at the Drill Hall yesterday were of a uniformly high class, said the judge, Mr L. G. Moss, of Greatford. The standard displayed had been an agreeable surprise to him. One of the most successful yet staged, the show was held by the Wanganui Rose Society, in conjunction with the Wanganui Horticultural Society. Entries were good for most classes in the rose section, but similar support was not forthcoming for classes for some other types of flowers. The section for carnation growers failed to draw any entries, and few awards were made in sweet pea. pansy and viola classes. Champion rose of the show was a “McCready’s Yellow” exhibited by Mrs Hector Christie, of Wanganui. The bloom was a fine example of the type, said the judge. Cut flower classes were judged by Mr R. Miller, of Wanganui, and Miss T. Anderson, of Wanganui, judged the decorative and children’s classes. Awards were:— SPECIAL TROPHIES Ellen Ballance Memorial Cup, points prize for amateur classes iir the National Rose Society section: Miss E. S. Beaven.
