CRICKET CRITIQUE

Positions Of Wanganui A Grade Teams Senior championship points in the Wanganui A grade cricket championship, after one series of matches, are: Wanganui 5, Tecnnical Old Boys 5, United 3, Collegiate 1, Technical College 0, Marist 0. Points are awarded as follows: Outright win 5, first innings win 3, draw 2, first innings loss 1, outright loss 0. Fielding Needs Polish. Apart from a few exceptions the fielding was of a low standard last Saturday, much lower, in fact, than at the corresponding period on the championship series last season. It is not expected that, a high standard should be reached at this time o* the season, but there is little excuse for fumbling easy ground balls and missing simple catches. Youngsters Impress. Though Wanganui Collegiate was beaten by an innings and 88 runs by Wanganui there was much to impress in the students’ display. Two batsmen in particular stood out as being players of the future. B. Upston, who failed in the first innings, played some very attractive shots in his second knock. Using his feet well and putting plenty of punch into his strokes with his shoulders, he hit shots all round the wicket to run up 14 when his side was badly in need of runs. He was unlucky to be run-out by a very fast return. It would not surprise to see this young batsman further up the batting order this Saturday. R. White compiled a useful double of 19 not out and 23. He too turned on a wiue range of shots and hit the ball hard. With more experience and confidence these two boys should become useful cricketers to Wanganui. M.C.C. AVERAGES. J. G. Dewes, the Cambridge and Middlesex left-hander, led the M.C.C. batting averages after four matches of the team’s Australian tour. In five visits to the wicket he made 181 runs, was three times not out for an average of 90.5. D. S. Compton, who is the first professional to be vice-captain of an M.C.C. team, headed the bowling figures with an average of 17.25. He was second in the batting list.
