Gussie Moran An Impressive Figure On The Tennis Court

“Miss Gussie Moran, the American tennis player, is an impressive figure on the tennis court and is an excellent player,” said Mrs Hugh Percy in an interview. With her husband and family, Mrs. Percy returned to Wanganui on Monday night after an absence of three years in England. "Like all American players, Miss Moran dressed stylishly, and despite the publicity, she was undoubtedly a tennis personality and played with marked skill and ability,” said Mrs. Percy. In referring to rationing, Mrs. Percy said there was plenty to eat in England but when rationing was in full force it was the monotony of the diet that jaded the appetite. The food position in England had much improved in recent month, but parcels of tinned meats, fats and sugar were still greatly welcomed. People in England had praised the generosity of the people of New Zealand for their valued contributions of food parcels over the years. In contrast with New Zealand nylon stockings were difficult to purchase in England she said. Mrs. Percy spoke enthusiastically of the excellent plays and variety shows she had seen by television. Clothing prices were on the increase before she left England, Mrs. Percy added.
