Comic Court, Topweight, Scores Decisive Victory In Melbourne Cup At Flemington

M!•; 1,1501 RNE, Nov. 7 (Ree. T 0.30 pm).—Comic Court, carrying 9.5, topweight, scored an easy win in the Melbourne Cup at l-'lemington this afternoon, when the V.11.C. spring carnival was continued.

.This was Comic Court’s third attempt to win the big race, and his victory today showed that lie is the outstanding horse in Australia at ihe present time.

Beginning well. Comic Court was third to the six furlongs and was pulling hard. His young rider then allowed him to go to the front and entering the straight with- a good lead, he went 'right away to score in effortless style by three lengths from Chicquita, with Morse Code a length away, third. Comic Court received a remarkable ovation on returning to scale, and his win today showed that he has never been in better form. Chicquita again showed what a great mare she is by finishing on to run second. She did not have any chance of catching the winner, but she battled on determinedly. Morse Code, which was quietly fancied for the Cup, did well to finish third and he is evidently a stayer above the ordinary. Benvolo was just defeated out of third place and showed that he is a first-class stayer. Had he not been penalised for his Moonee Valley Cup he would probably have taken a hand in the finish. The Derby winner, Alister, which started a firm favourite, never threatened danger. J. Purtell, who has ridden Comic Court in all his engagements, decided to accept the mount on Alister instead of Comic Court as he considered the topweight had too much weight and would find the distance beyond him. Comic Court, however, upset all calculations by winning easily.

The New Zealand horse Bhutan ran fairly well but at no time actually threatened danger. Playboy and Bruin were pulled up. Indian Chief and Gold Bar fell in the straight. Details of results: —
