Auster Plane Is Forced To Land On Beach
AUCKLAND, Nov. 6.—An Auster plane was forced down on a beach near Maunganui Bluff, North Auckland, late last night. It was flying to Horeke, Hokianga, from Hastings. The pilot and one passenger were not injured, according to a message which reached Auckland early this morning. The owner and pilot was Mr. E. A. G. Gray, garage proprietor, of Horeke. The plane left Hastings at 3.15 terday afternoon and was reported overdue in the evening. Flying conditions were poor around Auckland and northward. Approaching darkness and thick fog forced Mr Gray to make an emergency landing on a small stretch of beach near Maunganui Bluff at about 7 o'clock. He brought his plane down safely, but it ran into soft sand and the propellor was broken. Neither Mr Gray nor his 18-year-old son, who was his passenger, was injured. They walked five miles to the home of Mr Jim Brown, at Kawerua. After having a meal they returned with MrBrown and a pair of horses to save the plane from the incoming tide.
