The Price Of Bread

Sir, —I note with interest in a recent issue of the “Chronicle” that prompt action will be taken by the Director of Price Control against any breaches of the bread price order, but I would like to ask why bakers are allowed to charge 4ld for half of a 21b. loaf? There arc scores of people living alone, often in poor circumstances, who thus have to pay 9d for every 21bs. of bread they buy, as half a loaf is more than sufficient for their needs. Surely a baker does not require to be paid a further halfpenny for the simple action of breaking a 21b. loaf in two, which results in excess profit to the retailer at the expense of those who can least afford it—l am, etc., “SQUARE DEAL."
