Patea Man On Trial; Indecent Assault On Children Alleged
The trial began in the Supreme Court at Wanganui, yesterday, of William Henry Sedgman, a cleaner, employed at the Patea Freezing Works, aged 61, who pleaded not guilty to fourcharges of indecently assaulting two girls, aged eight years. The offences were alleged to have been committed in Patea on September 24 and October 7.
Much of yesterday was taken up with evidence called by the Crown Prosecutor, Mr. N. R. Bain, and when the adjournment was taken late in the afternoon the case was part heard.
Mr. S. G. Cathro (Patea) is conducting the case for the defence. The jury consists of Messrs. W. J. Benson (foreman), R. Wilson, J. Shingleton, J. L. Allen, F. T. Dempster, G. N. McDougall, J. P. Clark, A. H. B. Lockett, S. C. Robinson, M. E. Currin, N. Nunn and G. H. Oliver. Mr. Bain, opening his address to the jury, said that the Crown alleged that both children were involved in incidents wtih accused on September 24 and again on October 7. The hearing will be continued at 10 a.m. today.
