Beaumaris Decisively Defeats The Unicom And Felicitous In Canterbury Cup At Riccarton

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (Special).—Beaumaris definitely established his position as the best horse in training in the Dominion when he inflicted a decisive defeat on the New Zealand Derby winner, The Unicorn, in the Canterbury Cup, one mile and a-half at weight-for-age, run at Riccarton today.

The pace was easy for the first half-mile but was solid for the concluding mile and Beaumaris, outstaying his opponents, won easily and in the manner of a true champion. ,

Jamell got to the front when the field had run two furlongs, bvp soon after passing the mile The Unicorn took over and he was closely followed by Beaumaris and Jamell, with Felicitous, Roving Robin, Golden Amber, Super Snipe and Royal Tan following. The Unicorn had a slight advantage from Beaumaris and Jamell turning for home, but Beaumaris quickly drew level with The Unicorn and headed him in a few strides. The result was never in doubt over the last furlong, and Beaumaris carried on to win by three lengths. The Unicorn was an easy second from Felicitous, with Jamell fourth, and Super Snipe, Royal Tan, Golden Amber and Roving Robin came home at intervals. Beaumaris was master of the situation at all stages of the race and was perfectly ridden by Colin Wilson. Pierre, the second favourite, scored a convincing win in the Fendalton Handicap from The Rip and Arctotis, with the favourite, Jolly Sailor, no closer than eighth. The Rip was responsible for a very solid pace throughout, being the leader from the mile to the distance. He was closely attended down the back straight by Arctotis, Paddy Joe, Pierre and Infatuate, Blue Spec and Hobgoblin being next and Detention and Jolly Sailor heading the remainder. The Rip was two lengths clear at the half-mile, and as he entered the straight Arctotis and Blue Spec were a length behind him, Pierre and Detention being next, ahead of Infatuate, Flying Sovereign, Arcara and Paddy Joe. The Rip and Arctotis settled down to a hard struggle from the false rail but soon were joined by Pierre, and it did not take him long to settle their chances. He ran on well to win by a length from The Rip, who beat Arctotis by half a head. The first three were well clear of the rest of the field, Hobgoblin being fourth, nearly four lengths away, with Flying Sovereign, Arcara and Responsive in a bunch. Then came Jolly Sailor, Elofa and Paddy Joe. Renowned and Robin’s Reward were never dangerous.

There was a close finish in the Jockey Club Handicap, in which a fresh horse in Ned Kelly narrowly beat Voltaic.

Resolute was responsible for most of the pace, and he led into the straight from Robinfaye, Trinidad, Magical, Voltaic, Great Way, Ned Kelly, Prawns and Statesman. Ned Kelly and Voltaic came up to the leaders near the false rail and a little further on Statesman and Prawns became prominent. In a hard finish Ned Kelly just shaded Voltaic and beat him by half a head. Statesman, who could not keep up in the early stages and had to make up considerable ground from the half-mile, finished solidly for third, beating Prawns by a head for this place. Prince Defaulter also came from the back for fifth, and Resolute, Trinidad, Social News and Castlebrae were next to finish.

The second day of the Centennial Cup meeting was held in fine weather. The attendance was good. It was the first occasion since 1942 that the Cup meeting has been continued on a weekday, and excellent racing was seen on a good track. The winning doubles combination, Pierre and Ned Kelly, returned £63 19s for £l. The totalisator put through £110,852 10s, including £B5ll 10s on the double, against £105,129 10s on the second day last year, which was held on a Saturday in unsettled weather.
