Communist China Can Help Korea Or Plunge World Into War; Tense Days

LONDON, Nov 6 (Recd 6 apm).— “Communist China could end the war in Korea at once if she wished said the Attorney-General, Sir Hartley Shawcross, in a speech at Leeds last night. He said: “A word from the Government in Peking to remnants of the North Korean Government could ensure restoration of peace and order in Korea immediately. All of us hope that they will say the word, and not be pressed by others into spreading the conflict and causing greater bloodshed. ’As far as we are concerned, we will go forward resolutely in support of the policy of the United Nations. This is a most dangerous time. It is a time when impetuous rashness, or bellicose action of one kind or another, might easily precipitate the whole world into war. It is a time when firmness and fairness can still save the world from war. "Britain rallied not to fight Communism, but aggression. The action which is being taken in Korea is intended solely for the purpose of restoring law and order. The United Nations troops will withdraw as soon as the people of North and South Korea have had an opportunity, under free elections supervised by the United Nations, with Russia there if she chooses, to elect a Government. The only object is enforcement of international law and restoration of inter-

nal order, and that involves no kind of threat at all against China or Manchurian territory, or against industrial activities near the border of Manchuria, which are of great importance to China.”
